Pictures for my magazine

I have taken a lot of photo's for my music magazine, and I followed my planning chart when taking them. I have put all my images onto Flickr. The web address to see all my images is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/110678005@N07/

From all of the images I've taken, I picked 17 images which are the best for my magazine, and would look right on the front cover of a POP magazine, and the ones that are my favourite. I edited them on a website called FotoFlexer, which gives you the access to use profession editing equipment for free.
While taking my pictures, I followed the conventions of image's got magazines,I feel the two main and important one's are the shots (medium close ups and close ups) and eye contact. I looked back at magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Billboard and Q.

Photo Planning

I'm going to have my friends Elise Jones, Georgia Waldron posing for my media magazine.I have asked and chosen these people as they all have an individual look about them, and look good on photos, They all mainly girls as they are the dominate gender in pop. The shots i want the most are Close-ups and Medium long shots with eye contact, this is so the reader/audience can capture there personalities through the image. I want Low angles so they appear powerful. For some images, i might have they facing away from the camera, for a different style of image, but if i do that i will use them for contents and double page spread. I have looked at the latest fashion trends/magazines, and also what the celebrities are wearing now in music videos.
Some examples of there apperance ect...
Elise:  Her hair will be extremely curly, (Her hair is brown too blonde ombre) I want her make-up to be more out there. E.g. Dark lipstick, lots of eye make-up. I want her appearance to be influenced by Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Rita Ora. I want her to have the cool, pretty, edgy look. All her tops will be black, and all her bottoms will be high waisted. ( Shorts/Tartan Trousers)
Georgia Waldron: Her hair will be long and straight (also a light brown too ombre blonde.) I want her make-up to be bright and pretty, red lipstick. Her appearance will be influenced by people like Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Pixie Lott. I want her too look sweet, popular, quirky and edgy. She will have different tops on, that are different colours on, that have strange/unique patterns on, showing how different she is.

I think by the way I will style there hair, make-up and costume l really fit with the genre on POP. Also no pop artists are a-like, so I want them to look slightly different to each other, and other  artists. So they are original and cool looking.

Everyone in my magazine will be young adults/teenagers, and representing people from that age to be a little naughty and edgy, but they have fun, and showing its the best age to be. They will be mainly females, as i they are the most dominant gender in the Pop world, but i will include male as i want it too appeal to both men and woman. I want them to go through a range of different facial expressions. E.g. Shocked, Serious, Pouted, Cross eyes, Sticking there tongue out. Showing them as silly and fun, repeating the representation of young people that i want to get across.

The shots will be taken mainly inside my house, I am setting up a photo studio type thing in my room, so i can get a white background, and good quality images, also im using different lighting to see which effects work best.
I will also get different shots from outside, by brick walls, in the dark and with a bright flash making the image look white and different.

Here are some examples of previous magazines front cover images, and Photoshoots celebrities have done. I am hoping i can get images like these.

Ive set out my plan in a table, so its a clear way for me to know what to do, and when.

COLOUR SCHEME

I want my magazine to appeal to mainly females, i have thought up a colour scheme that would work best with the genre, what would look nice on a magazine, what colours work well, and what my target audience would like, this is what i came up with....

These are the main colours I want to use for my magazine. This image shows which background would go best with certain colours, and what backdrop colour I would use.
The colours I've put are either black, white or pastel colours, this is because they look nice, and most girls prefer pastel colours to bold ones, as they are most elegant and look nicer against a black background/Dark image, however if i want something to be eye catching I will use neon or a bold colour(or a red background with black or white writing over the top seen above) instead.

Layouts for my Front Cover

Here are my layouts for my front cover. I want them to be quite simple, as I want the image to be the main focus, so I have only put a little text around the page.

These layouts have been influenced by Dazed and Confused and ID magazine's front covers. This is because I like there layout, and in my questionnaire almost everyone I asked did too, and even though they use  high quality images, The images I am going/want to take will live up to that standard.

Masthead Idea's

I have asked many people that are in my target audience which masthead would be the best name to call my magazine, The two that where chosen are UNCUT and Influence, so from that I've decided to create the masthead for my magazine using both UNCUT and influence, seeing which look the best.

These a font's I've used from Fireworks and online font websites, Some of them are quiet boring, however some may work for a music magazine. Some of the mastheads where created in fireworks, i used fonts such as 'Poplar STD' and 'Arial Black,' I added an image into these, making them abit different to the average masthead. I think some of the look really good, and professional and will work with my type of genre, also because i am looking at Dazed and confused (The music magazine) , they have used this style of masthead in previous issues, and i feel my masthead idea's have been influenced by them.

Representations in my music magazine

I am constructing a magazine that will represent and be based around the genre of Pop, I want my magazine to look and feature people who are meant to be in a Pop magazine, so because of this I want my magazine to represent both males and females, but focusing more at girls. This is because a lot of big well known artist are females, and more men and woman like them, These people are expected to be friendly, bubbly, edgy, positive and also approachable, they will be dressed in different/original clothes that go with the current fashion trend, Shopping at places like TopShop, American Apparel, Riverisland,Selfridges and other mainstream shops. The types of artists who look/dress and are well know in the pop industry are:

I also want them to be aged around 15-24, and shown in a positive way, making the audience want to be like them. I will represent all races, as i want my magazine to be mainstream and not for one group of people, However i don't want to look at religions, this is due to the fact that no pop artists sing about there religion, or have one so i don't think its necessary, Also because all pop stars have different backgrounds and life styles and i want that to come across in my magazine, giving the message that everyone is different and pushes boundaries and everyone still likes them, so people should be afraid to be different. I do not want to represent people who are rebel, devil worshipers (E.g Rockers/Heavy metal artists and bands) This is because i want my magazine to show bands and artists in a positive and nice youthful way, and representing people like Metallica and Bring me the horizon.

Ive chosen to do a Pop magazine, as its the genre I and a lot of other young adults listen too, making it a mainstream magazine. My magazine will focus on artists who are known worldwide, and up-coming artists. My audience will be people who spend there time going out to nightclubs/bars, enjoy spending time with friends, talking about new music/artist and enjoy going to big concerts such as the EMA's, Teen Choice, MTV and also big concerts held in places such as the O2 Arena.

This moodboard shows  the contents of my magazine, the genre it focus's on (pop) and some sub-genre's I will also include (RnB) Also the types of artists i will look at, and the things the audience will want to read about in my magazine.

LIIAR Analysis

I've done a LIIAR analysis on Billboard, This is because its such a popular and successful magazine and it looks at the same genre i am. I want mine to be just as good as it, so if i analysis it i will know exactly what my magazine should be like and I also found out general information on Billboard.

LANGUAGE-
The layout is always based on the image and colours used on the front cover, this is used to target a certain audience, the magazine uses this to attract people who like the certain music shown in this magazine (Pop, RnB etc...) The Masthead is always located at the top of the magazine starting from the Top left to the top right, its either based behind or in front of the image this shows importance of the people featured in the magazine, the position this here so it’s the first thing the audience looks at and as it’s the first thing they look at its recognisable to them as well, then yours eyes are lead to the image then to the cover line which is the 2nd largest text on the front cover and also related to the image, the you're eye is led to any other text or images on the page, The layout is always full of text/information and images but never to cluttered, this communicates the bold, exciting and colourful style of the magazine

IDEOLOGY-
Billboard uses text, colour, layout to mirror what the magazine is about, showing the genre of the music and creating this using visual language, e.g. the masthead has been designed with big bold black writing in sans serif font and also apart from the capital B at the start in lower case letters, and have 3 blocked colours (red, yellow and blue) inside certain letters, this shows the audience that its not a serious magazine, that’s its fun and it also shows the music that is features in the magazine (such as pop, as when you thing of pop music you think of bold colours) The image also usually connects with the layout of the magazine and the colour scheme’s they use in that certain addition.

INSTITUTION-
Billboard was founded in Cincinnation November 1, 1894, by William h. Donaldson and James Hennegan.

AUDIENCE-
I researched and found that its read by more than 2.5 million people each month in 100 different countries around the world, but you can tell its more of a younger generation magazine, this is because of the different colours used and also the style of fonts, and how the magazine layout is shown, its in a eye catching and modern style which makes people who are teenagers want to look/buy it, I also found that its an mainstream magazine in America more than in the UK and it’s a magazine full of different genres of music, and because it uses the 3 main primary colours in the title and keeps it in the housing style, everyone, male and female will like it, and its an appealing magazine to all ages.

REPRESENTATION-

This magazine shows a wide range of different artist/bands but its mostly Pop/Hip Hop/RnB music genres, the magazine gets the message across that Pop/Hip Hop/RnB music is the best music ever, and people should dress, and look like how the artists look and live like them, it portrays a certain lifestyle and its sending a message across to the audience that this is the best lifestyle to live, and this is how to look the coolest ect…

I asked my target audience which one they like the most, and what would look good and sound good as a magazine masthead, and it was a mixture between Uncut and Influence, so i've designed both titles to see which look, and would work best.

Brand Identity and Values for my magazine

I want my magazine to have a distinctive look about it, I want my magazine to be influenced by magazines such as DAZED and Confused, This is because its a lot different to many music magazines I've seen. I want it to have a clear, good quality and unique image, of one or two people - but i really like how DAZED have use half and half of to peoples faces and i want to try that out for my magazine. I also want to use different patterned backgrounds, and add different ones too the image, and have a white or black masthead, as for my magazine. This is what i want my magazine to be recognized for and to be different to others. I want my magazine to be a young, fresh new and exciting magazine that looks at all new music. This is because i want the genre of my magazine to be a wide range of music and artists, i have to be sure it looks correct as my magazine will be for a large audience. Also i want my magazine to stick to the conventions of a typical music magazine, but i'm not going to have loads of text on the front cover, as i want all the attention on the image. I also want my magazine to show a celebrity lifestyle and appearance of them, showing that the cool and glamorous lifestyle is the only one to have. I want my magazine to be exclusive, so i don't want to show ordinary picture people have from concerts and tours and new fashion trends that celebrities wear,or have just brought out, as i want it to be never seen before stuff, that you can only find in my magazine.

I want my magazine to bring a cool and edgy vibe to the music magazine industry, and aiming it a young people will create it into a huge mainstream magazine, Also making it subvert the stereotypes of a normal magazine will make it different and interesting/unusual and creating it the must read magazine.

Target Audience for Music magaine

My Music Magazine is going to based on a range of different genre's of music, As i want it to be a mainstream magazine such as Billboard,I-D and Dazed This will be appealing to people who like artist like Rihanna, Ne-yo and Beyonce, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus,Eminem,Jay-Z and other big artists, It will be a magazine for only the best music. This means my audience will be teenagers/young adults (C2DE) and around the age of 15 – 24, and a gender of both Male and Female but aim towards Female, as they like the artists i want to focus my magazine around.. I'm also looking at these sort of artists because they are big fashion icons and everyone wants to be like them and dress like them. These types of people shop at both mainstream shops and shops aimed at a niche audience such as Urban Outfitters, TopShop/TopMan, RiverIsland, Marc Jacobs, American Apparel, these people usually believe in Girl Power (If your a girl) and, being rich, glamorous, also sometimes they believe in/Worship the devil, And this is represented through the clothes they wear with symbols/captions and also in there song lyrics. These type of people also spend there free time going out shopping or clubs or where ever they can be seen by people, they also engage in other media like twitter and Tumblr and YouTube.
